QLC+ and SoundSwitch take different approaches to lighting control. Compare them using your DJ software, operating system, interfaces and preferred method of building cues.
QLC+: configure the control surface
QLC+ is an open-source option with configurable lighting workflows. Its Art-Net plugin offers network input and output. Expect to configure your patch and controls, and test the interface supported by your installed version.
SoundSwitch: evaluate the DJ workflow
SoundSwitch offers DJ-oriented lighting workflows. Check its supported DJ applications, operating systems and output hardware before purchasing. SoundSwitch lists Windows and macOS in its system requirements. It is not subscription-only. Its official licensing guide lists monthly, annual and a version-specific 2.x perpetual option. Read the current terms rather than assuming a single payment model.
Where DMXSmartLink fits
DMXSmartLink can operate its own mixed lighting rig or receive supported Art-Net/sACN input. QLC+ Art-Net output is one configuration to test. Do not assume a direct SoundSwitch software integration or network-output path without checking its current supported outputs.
If using physical DMX from another system, a supported DMX input interface and correct patch are needed. An output-only dongle cannot receive that signal. Simultaneous physical input and output requires a supported arrangement.
Test what matters to your set
- How are scenes or music-driven cues created and triggered?
- What hardware and licensing unlock the required output?
- Can your controller operate the show while DJ software is busy?
- How do fixtures behave on reconnect and after a restart?
Protocol interoperability does not make show files interchangeable. Keep backups for each application's project and configuration, and rehearse the full chain before relying on it at a gig.
Check your version and your lights
DMXSmartLink runs on supported macOS, Windows 11, Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi 5 systems, or on a preconfigured HUB. It accepts Art-Net and sACN input and provides Art-Net output; physical DMX requires a supported interface. Smart-light functions depend on the model and integration, including Homebridge or Home Assistant. The bundled Home Assistant companion on Pi/Ubuntu is experimental. Cloud integrations require internet; local paths have their own compatibility requirements.
